2004 Basketball Coaches Summit Win the Tip! member coaches gathered at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, MO on Saturday, September 18, 2004 for a member only coaches summit. This member only event was highlighted by Retired Hall of Fame Coach Ron Slaymaker. Returning for his second Win the Tip! event, Coach Slaymaker presented “If I were to coach again” his thoughts on different aspects of the game he would do differently if he were to start coaching again. His presentation included an on-court shooting demonstration. Following Coach Slaymaker, Rob Miller, the Director of Champions of Character Initiatives for the NAIA explained the role of a coach. Returning for his fourth Win the Tip! Event, Rob discussed the importance of teaching character skills, just like you would teach a game skill (define, model, shape, and reinforce). Fred Turner led the open discussion session with a breakdown of his favorite special situations. “These O.B. plays and O.B. plays for late game situations really do work. This is not something we pulled out of a book on plays, but time tested plays that have worked for us in games,” stated veteran coach Fred Turner. Members continued discussion on practice tips, individual workout drills, scrimmage situations and shooting drills well passed 5:00 PM. This was the first Win the Tip! Coaching Summit and the fourth Win the Tip! Member Event. A special thank you to member, Pete Gaskill for coordinating the location.
