2005 Coaching Retreat Recap Win the Tip! member coaches convened on the campus of Ottawa University, May 20th and 21st for a Win the Tip! Basketball Coaches Retreat. This member only event tipped off with Coach Dick Luther explaining how to “Get on Target.” “This program saved my life,” stated Coach Luther. “Coaching basketball is addictive, I’m addicted. It’s the love of kids, love of getting kids to come together and it’s thrilling. However, you must take care of yourself. We as coaches, the last thing we take care of is ourselves.” Coach Luther also presented on “Staying in Games with Lesser Talent” and “13 Zone Offense.” The 3rd Annual Retreat also included a presentation from Coach Don Showalter of Mid-Prairie High School/USA Basketball. Coach Showalter shared numerous thoughts on the game of basketball and coaching from his 30+ year coaching career including; improving yourself as a coach and the importance of developing trust in your program. The Saturday afternoon session kicked off with Coach Debbie Carrier from Johnson County Community College providing an on-court demo sharing some of her favorite drills and sets that helped her lead Johnson County to the NJCAA National Championship in the 1999-2000 season. Members discussed numerous topics regarding the game and the history of the game during an open discussion sessions throughout the retreat. Many members led open discussions on a topic of their choice. This year’s topics included post play, post play conditioning ideas, team defense (mental awareness), practice drills, end-of-the game sets and more. This was the third year in a row that Ottawa University has hosted a Win the Tip! Basketball Coaching Retreat. It was the seventh Win the Tip! Member Event.
