Leadership Tip!
In his book titled “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork” John Maxwell discusses the Law of the Catalyst, which states that winning teams have players who make things happen. “A team that reaches it’s potential always has a catalyst. The characteristics of a catalyst are intuitive, communicative, passionate, talented, creative, initiating, responsible, generous, and influential.” John Maxwell’s book is one of many books that Win the Tip! members are reading. Professional Development Tip!
At the Final Four in San Antonio, TX member Reggie Minton (Associate Executive Director of the NABC) led a panel discussion “Characteristics of a Coach- What an athletic director or head coach looks for when hiring a new coach.” This session was a part of the NABC’s Professional Development Series, a new certification program for basketball coaches. The panel included Tom Izzo, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Michigan State, David Hart, the Athletic Director at Florida State University, and Peter P. Roby, the director of Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society. Peter Roby stated, “You look for a coach that is well-rounded. How engaged are they in the campus community? Are they only focused on basketball and not engaged in what is going on across campus?” Coach Izzo added that, “We need an assistant that wants to take ownership and is not afraid to tell a player what he needs to hear.” David Hart stated, “The ability to anticipate problems and handle tough situations, are some key characteristics we look for when hiring a new coach.”
