The head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Phil Jackson commented on the intrinsic joy of the game in his book Sacred Hoops, which was reprinted in Randolph Feezell’s book, Sport, Play & Ethical Reflection. Jackson states, “at one point in my coaching career I realized I needed to become more detached emotionally and put the game in proper perspective…we should not lose sight of the intrinsic joy of the game, for that’s the locus of the powerful but paradoxical attraction of sport as well as the ground for wise attitudes and good conduct.”
