BILL AGRONIN- Win the Tip! Member and head women’s basketball coach at Niagara University. The women’s basketball team was honored recently by the Women Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) when it was named to the 2004-05 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The award recognized 25 Division I teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade-point average for the 2004-05 season. Niagara ranked No. 24 on the list with a team GPA of 3.302. “I am very proud that our program is once again being recognized for this honor,” head coach BILL AGRONIN said. Playing Division I basketball is extremely demanding and to be able to achieve in the classroom and win on the court is a testament to the hard work of both the players and our coaching staff in working to toward excellence.” JEFF MAHER- The new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. Coach Maher’s coaching stops include Washington State, UCLA, Jacksonville State and Oregon State with Ralph Miller. MIKE MOHLER Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Allan Hancock Community College in CA. Coach Mohler begins his seventh year in the Allan Hancock basketball program. An excellent teacher of the finer points of the game, Coach Mohler has over twenty years of basketball coaching experience which includes stints at the high school, college and professional ranks. Mohler has coached at Hughson High School in Fresno County and at his alma mater, Arroyo Grande High School. At the collegiate level, he was an assistant at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo for three years and served as head coach for one year. He also spent one year coaching the Florida Beach Dogs in the Continental Basketball Association. Mohler has served many summers at the most prestigious basketball camps including the Michael Jordan Nike Camp. A 1982 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School, Mohler was an outstanding prep player who earned All-Northern League honors in his senior season. He played two years at Cuesta College and finished his playing career at Cal State Stanislaus, where he also was an accomplished pitcher on the Warriors baseball team. Mike Mohler and his wife Molly reside in Santa Maria.
Win the Tip! member Phil Homeratha, the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS stressed three important points when asked on what advice he would give to coaches from a coaching career that spans over 40 years. 1) Define a goal. What do you want to accomplish as a coach and how you are going to achieve it? 2) Make a commitment. Once you have defined your goal, make time and really commitment to being a coach. Student-athletes need coaches and want to be coached. 3) Study the game. Be educated on what it takes to be successful. Learn how to teach a skill and know how to implement the appropriate game plan.
