AMY STEPHENS TO PRESENT AT ANNUAL RETREAT!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Tip! member AMY STEPHENS, the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Drake University, will present at the Win the Tip! Annual Coaching Retreat in Kansas City – Saturday, May 20th.  In her third season at Drake University, Coach Stephens currently has the Bulldogs on a six-game winning streak and an overall record of 14-9.  Stephens spent a season at Nebraska as an assistant coach before being named head coach at Drake in April of 2003.  Her prior head coaching experience occurred in eight seasons as the head coach at Nebraska-Kearney.  She built Nebraska-Kearney into one of the most successful NCAA Division II programs in the nation, while becoming the school's all-time winningest coach with a 197-43 (.821) record.   A four-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Stephens led Nebraska-Kearney to five RMAC titles while the team averaged nearly 25 victories per season. UNK earned seven straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and also set an NCAA Division II record with an 87-game homecourt winning streak that lasted from January of 1995 through November of 2001.  Stephens was the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) District 7 Coach of the Year and a finalist for national coach-of-the-year honors in 2000.  As a player, Stephens was one of most prolific scorers in Nebraska school history. The 5-foot 6-inch guard from Alliance, Neb., ranks third on Nebraska's all-time scoring list with 1,976 points as a four-year starter from 1986 through 1989.  In February of 2000, Stephens claimed one of five spots on Nebraska's All-Century Team as part of the school's celebration of 25 years of women's intercollegiate athletics.  Amy also was inducted into the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame in 1999.  She earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from Nebraska in 1991 and completed her master's degree in educational administration from Nebraska-Kearney in 1998 (Media bio courtesy of Drake University Sports Information).  More information regarding this member only event will be available in March.

LEADERSHIP TIP!
-------------------------------
The following is an often told story about a legendary basketball coach.  Can you guess who it is……After the 1948 season, the coach at Indiana State finished his contract with the school and pursued other coaching opportunities.  During his interviews, he narrowed down his first choice to the University of Minnesota.  Interviews went well with Minnesota and lesser programs on the west coast and the coach expected multiple offers.  Sensing the need to get the program started regardless where he signed his contract, the coach informed Minnesota he needed a verbal decision by a certain day.  On the day he was to receive the call from Minnesota, no phone call came.  The coach, although disappointed, verbally committed to rebuilding a program in California with the athletic department at the west coast school.  The following day, a call from Minnesota came to the coach with the athletic department apologizing as a snowstorm had wiped out telephone lines.  The coach, although agonized by his dream job being offered to him, replied that he had given his word to another university and could not allow his word to be compromised and declined Minnesota’s offering.  The coach’s strong sense of responsibility and honesty became a hallmark of one of the most successful sports programs ever assembled.  The coach and program:  John Wooden and UCLA.  This above excerpt was written by Josh Muxen, a University of Idaho Student, 2006.  The source of the story was taken from the book, “My Personal Best, Life Lessons form an All-American Journey,” by John Wooden with Steve Jamison.

LEADERSHIP TIP!
------------------------------------
The following is an excerpt from the book, WHEN PRIDE STILL MATTERED, A Life of Vince Lombardi.  By David Maraniss.   “Still there was a crucial distinction in his philosophy between paying the price to win and winning at any price.  He did not believe in cheating to win, and he showed no interest in winning the wrong way, without heart, brains and sportsmanship.  Although he never shied away from the violence of the game, insisting that football was not a contact sport, but a collision sport, he did not encourage dirty play…….When one of Lombardi’s defensive backs tripped a receiver in frustration, he immediately yanked him from the game even though the referees did not see the violation.  Winning in and of itself was not enough for him.  His players knew that he was more likely to drive them mercilessly after they had played sloppily but won than when they had played hard but lost.”  This book is one of many titles that Win the Tip! Members are reading.  To view the list visit www.winthetip.org

REBOUNDING DRILL!
---------------------------------
The following rebounding drill is courtesy of Win the Tip! Member, Mark Stadem of Brandon Valley High School.   Set up in a 5 on 5 shell. As a coach/manager moves along the perimeter with the ball, the defenders must constantly position themselves correctly. When the coach/manager shoots, the defenders must box out, pursue, rebound, chin and outlet the ball back to the coach/manager.  The rules include; 1) Defense must obtain 5 rebounds before they are off.  For every offensive rebound they allow, they must run one up and back.  2) For every rebound the offense obtains, it is 1 less defensive rebound they have to get before they are off. (Example: If they get 2 off. Boards, they only need 3 def. boards before they are off) 3) Always rotate offense to defense then out.  4) No out-of-bounds, every shot is live (make or miss).  5) No fouls called.  Coach Stadem likes to use this drill in practice because:  1) It makes players rebound from a help side position.  A lot of rebound drills have players matched up, standing right next to one another.  The box out from the help-side, ball-side positioning is more game like.  2) It rewards both offensive and defensive rebounding.  3) It not just one rebound and you're off. You must get numerous rebounds, and the repetition is excellent.  4.) Its competitive.  For more information please contact Coach Stadem at Mark.Stadem@k12.sd.us
