Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Avila University and Win the Tip! Member Rod Seaba is currently serving his country instead of coaching this season. The following statement was provided by member Brian Sudis, an assistant with Coach Seaba at Avila University………..Coach Seaba, a US Army veteran, and still a member of the US Army active reserves, was called to active duty shortly before practices were to commence this season. Second Lieutenant Seaba was mobilized and sent to Arizona for training along with the rest of his reserve unit prior to their anticipated deployment to Iraq in February 2005. The Avila coaching staff and players are proud of Coach Seaba and his selfless dedication and look forward to his safe return. We would be remiss if we failed to mention the sacrifice of Coach Seaba's family, his wife Jamey, and his two daughters, Kassidy and Kasey. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all…….. Leadership Tip!
The following was taken from member Jeff Janssen’s “The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches.” The first secret of successful coaches is that they are character based. Credible coaches seek to do the right thing. They are honorable people with high ethical standards and great integrity. They tell the truth to their athletes and never manipulate or play mind games with them. They conduct themselves in a professional manner and take pride in representing their teams and athletes with class. Credible coaches look to surround themselves with people of solid character because they know that character is just as important as talent in the long run…….Jeff Janssen helps coaches and athletes develop the team chemistry, mental toughness, and leadership skills necessary to win championships. Leadership Tip!
From his book, “Make the Big Time Where You Are” NAIA Hall of Fame Football Coach Frosty Westering discusses THE BIG TIME paradox. He states, “The BIG TIME is not a place; it’s the state of your heart. Many people never really know their heart, that dynamic spirit that generates hope, faith, and love. THE BIG TIME is not something you get- it’s something you become. Those people who believe it’s a place find out that once they get THERE, then it disappears. They find that it was only an illusion, the illusion that the THE BIG TIME is a destination rather than a journey. The adventurous road always continues on, and wherever we are on our journey through life, we can make it THE BIG TIME.” Coach Westering’s book is one of many book titles listed on the Win the Tip! Book List (www.winthetip.org).
