OUT OF BOUNDS SITUATIONS!
-----------------------------------------------------

Win the Tip! Member BOB KLOPPENBURG is teamed up with Ernie Woods to provide Hoop Tactics for basketball coaches at all levels.  Their web site is designed to take an in-depth look into various basketball techniques and strategies of the game.  (www.cybersportsusa.com/hooptactics/HoopTactics.asp)  The following is taken from their web site.  Automatic reads are the first option on all out of bound situations. 1) Players should cut to basket for lay-up any time their defender plays with their back towards them watching the basketball.  2) When the inbounder is left unguarded, they should execute a quick "give & go" with the inbounder making a quick inbounds pass and cutting to the basket for a return pass.  3) If a defender faces up and plays with their back to the inbounds passer, players should have the "Green" light to execute a lob pass over the defender for shot.

FOUR KINDS OF PLAYERS AND COACHES- 1) Unconscious and Incompetent….Don't even know they have serious shortcomings.  2) Conscious and Incompetent….Is aware of shortcomings, the beginning of wisdom.  3) Conscious and Competent…..Mechanical and robotic, the more they think the slower their feet get.  4) Unconscious and Competent....Do not have to think to do the right things.  A fundamental mind for players and sound heart for a coach (Michael Jordan and John Wooden).   Courtesy of Win the Tip! SHOT FAKE – CLOSEOUT DRILL!
--------------------------------------------------------

The following drill is courtesy of Win the Tip! Member and Head Men’s Basketball coach at Texas Lutheran University, TOM OSWALD.  Coach Oswald states, we have a drill that we have been using lately that is a defensive/offensive drill.  We call it the shot fake/closeout drill and it really emphasizes the ability to penetrate to jump stops when help occurs along with teaching teammates to move on penetration and being ready to catch and shoot.  Defensively it hammers home your closeout footwork and initial slides along with help and recover technique.  Start with 3 offensive players on perimeter, remaining players on baseline (use two baskets if over 12 players).  Baseline line is defense and starts with the ball which they will pass to any offensive player.  They will then closeout to their coach’s desire (baseline/sideline or middle) and the offense will shot fake and penetrate to the basket.  Defense tries to contain for two slides where the next person in line will closeout to help and stop the ball.  The remaining two offensive players will float to good passing angles with the penetration.  The offensive player will pass to either teammate and go to the end of the line.  The player that initially closed out becomes an offensive player and the defender who helped recovers on the pass to the new offensive player where the drill starts over.  The coach can supplement the drill by having another ball and calling shot on the penetration and kick pass (so the offensive teammates are always ready to shoot).  They shoot and get their rebound returning the ball to the coach and going to the end of the defensive line.  Meanwhile the coach passes to one of the remaining offensive players and the next defender in line close's out to him continuing the drill.
