This will be the final part of a five-part series on the history of basketball taken from the book, COACHING BASKETBALL edited by Ralph Pim and Win the Tip! Member JERRY KRAUSE.  Author Dr. Kenneth L. Swalgin wrote in his article titled DUCK ON THE ROCK – The Origins and Mysteries of Basketball that the first women’s game was played at Smith College in 1893.  A recap of the game was published by the Springfield Republican.  The recap stated that no male spectators were allowed at the game as the girls wore bloomers to compete.  The dress for men in those days was long trousers.  It is possible to assume that women were the first to wear a form of shorts.  To order the book COACHING BASKETBALL please visit www.coachjerrykrause.com

KANSAS CITY SELECTED for 2006 ANNUAL RETREAT!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2006 Win the Tip! Annual Basketball Coaches Retreat will remain in the Midwest for the 4th straight year.  The Win the Tip! Board of Directors approved the location at a recent board meeting.  “We felt Kansas City overall offered the best location for the majority of our membership and will allow us to maintain a consistent location for at least one more year,” stated Jeff Willms, President of the Board of Directors for Win the Tip! and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Fort Hays State University.  The exact location and weekend in May will be announced at a later date.  The annual retreat has traditionally has been held the second or third week of May on a Friday and Saturday.  This will be the first time the event has not been held at Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS, just 45 miles Southwest of Kansas City.  “The Board felt a new venue closer to a major airport would help the retreat be more accessible for members and allow members more options for an overnight stay,” said Jeff.  The Annual Retreat is the largest event for the Win the Tip! Basketball Coaches Network.  Past presenters have included; Bob Frederick (University of Kansas), Reggie Minton (NABC), Ron Slaymaker (Retired-Emporia State), Rob Miller (NAIA), Dick Luther (UW-Waukesha), Don Showalter (Mid-Prairie HS/ USA Basketball), Debbie Carrier (Johnson County CC), and Mike Taylor (Ratiopharm Ulm –Germany).  The Annual Retreat will also be held in conjunction with the Win the Tip!
